Medicine and Technology [part of HCPLive]: Smart pill reports medication adherence

Smart pill reports medication adherence

What do you think of when you hear the term “smart pill?” Do you think of a camera pill used for endoscopy? Do you think of targeted drug therapy? Or, do you think of biomedical engineering?

Researchers at the University of Florida are developing a smart pill that has a tiny antenna and microchip. This pill could signal when it has made it into a patient’s stomach and report this information to a cell phone or computer. Now that’s what I call mobile health.

Interested in learning more about this technology? Then make sure to visit eTect to see what these researchers are doing. Another company that may be of interest is Proteus Biomedical since they’re also working on a smart pill. Good luck explaining dissolvable nanotechnology to your patients who won’t want to ingest any electronic components wrapped around their pills.
