Walgreen spent $480,000 to lobby Congress on health issues during Q1.

The AP (5/26) reported, “Drugstore operator Walgreen Co. spent $480,000 in the first quarter as it lobbied Congress on legislation related to national healthcare, drug imports and other issues, according to a recent disclosure report. The Deerfield, Ill.-based company also lobbied on health information technology, the military health plan, Tricare, and Medicare reimbursement for generic drugs in the January-March period.” In addition, Walgreen “lobbied on bills limiting and testing for the lead content of drugs and medical devices.”

Comment: I know this has nothing to do with Pharmacy informatics, but this really irks me, please indulge me for a second.  In addition to Walgreens spending this on Congress, they have put up a fight and court battle in a pharmacy ban on selling of cigarettes in Boston and San Francisco.  Crazy.
