Twitter, YouTube, Other Social Media Tools Becoming Popular in Medical World

Social networking tools — such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter — are moving into the medical world.

In an iHealthBeat Special Report by Kelly Wilkinson, health care and social media experts discuss the trend.

The Special Report includes comments from:

  • Lee Aese, manager of syndication and social media at the Mayo Clinic;
  • Russ Cucina, associate medical director for information technology at University of California-San Francisco Medical Center;
  • Bill Ferris, manager of Web services at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit; and
  • Ravi Nemana, executive director of services and health care with the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society at University of California-Berkeley.

Earlier this month, Henry Ford Hospital used Twitter to provide real-time updates of a surgery and pointed viewers to YouTube footage of the procedure.

Meanwhile, the Mayo Clinic began offering podcasts in 2005. It since has added a Facebook page, blogs and a YouTube channel (Wilkinson, iHealthBeat, 2/27). (5:21)
